AI-generated pornographic deepfakes have become so widespread that the issue reached Parliament yesterday, with one lawmaker proposing mandatory whipping for offenders.

The proposal was put forward by Rompin MP Datuk Abdul Khalib Abdullah, who argued that the long-term psychological trauma inflicted on victims and their families should be taken into account during sentencing.

Abdul Khalib said existing fines and prison terms should be strengthened to reflect the seriousness of the offence.

“Rompin proposes that perpetrators of pornographic deepfakes be subjected to mandatory whipping because the psychological harm suffered by victims can last a lifetime,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

Abdul Khalid said this while debating the Cyber Crime Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He also proposed establishing a national facial recognition system integrated with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

According to him, such a system would help identify fake social media accounts created using stolen identities.

Meanwhile, Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid also weighed in on the debate, urging the government to introduce emergency takedown orders that would compel social media platforms to remove harmful content within hours, particularly when children are involved.

“A child should never have to beg on the internet for their image to be taken down. Our country must act and move faster than the algorithm,” she said.
