It’s now midday and the Election Commission (EC) reported 26.43% (709k) voter turnout in the 16th Johor state election thus far. The last election in 2022 recorded 21.33%.
Manjung recorded the highest number of voter turnout at 34.4%, followed by Rengit (33.6%), and Semarang (33.2%).
A total of 1,076 polling centres and 4,889 voting streams opened simultaneously at 8am in the state early today.
The state election is exciting for new voters. Wong Wee Xiang, 20, who has been blind since birth, cast his ballot with the assistance of his mother at SJK (C) Tuan Poon. He arrived at the polling centre at about 9.15am and described the voting process as smooth. He was happy to have fulfilled his responsibility as a voter.
Meanwhile, college students and first-time voters Chen Sheng and Shan Sheng, both 21, left Kuala Lumpur at 2am by car to get to the polling centre in Johor Bahru early in the morning.
They arrived in their hometown at 5.30am and managed to grab breakfast before heading to line up outside the polling centre. They said it was important for every Malaysian to fulfill their civic duty and vote.
Disabled retiree Abdul Razak Hussain, 66, was undeterred by his condition and also made his way to the polling station via e-hailing from his home in Taman Pelangi Indah. He hopes youngsters do not miss the opportunity to vote, citing its importance to the country.
The Johor state election matters because this is the first time Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) coalition partners in the federal Madani government are competing against each other. Making things exciting is that a third of Johor’s electorate is under 30, and nearly half of those young voters are undecided, so it’s all up for grabs for the party that wants to win.
Forecasts predict that Barisan Nasional (BN) will hold an edge. The sentiment online showed that it could still go either way; some are happy with their representatives from both parties.
Reports indicate that parts of Johor might face rain later today, but it hasn’t deterred people from casting their votes. Early this morning, Muar experienced heavy rain, and voters turned up with umbrellas.
