With 49 out of 56 seats contested already accounted for in the 16th Johor State Election, Barisan Nasional (BN) returns to power with a bigger mandate – having secured 43 seats so far.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) followed with six seats, namely Bentayan, Simpang Jeram, Penggaram, Mengkibong, Stulang and Senai.

However, seven more seats have yet to be announced – Tiram, Puteri Wangsa, Johor Jaya, Perling, Skudai and Kota Iskandar – but this would have little impact, with BN already holding a two-thirds majority to form the government.

The emphatic victory cements BN’s dominance in the state and marks an improvement on its 2022 performance, when it won 40 seats to form the state government.

The result is particularly significant for Johor BN chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, whose decision to lead BN into the election without any formal seat negotiations with PH had drawn criticism especially from BN allies at the federal level.

The caretaker menteri besar has now emerged vindicated after voters delivered the coalition one of its strongest electoral performances in recent years.

Unofficially, BN won 48 seats while PH only managed to secure 8 seats.

In the just concluded election, BN and PH fielded candidates in all 56 seats while Perikatan Nasional (PN) stood in 33 seats.

For PH, the election proved to be another difficult outing.

The coalition, which previously held 13 seats — including Puteri Wangsa, then represented by MUDA — has only managed to win six so far.

The outcome adds to PH’s growing electoral concerns after its disappointing performance in last year’s Sabah state election, where it managed to win only one of the 22 seats it contested.

It’s also back to the drawing board for PN after a massively poor showing.

Muda, having contested in four seats, appears to have suffered a defeat alongside newcomer Bersama which attempted an ambitious 15.

Six independent candidates also took part in this year’s state election.
