Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim capped off his one-day visit to Penang on Saturday by attending the highlight event of the National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) 2026 celebrations.

Fresh from a two-day official visit to Turkmenistan, Anwar arrived in Malaysia at 3.30am before heading to Penang for three separate engagements, with the Hawana gala serving as his final programme in the state.

He subsequently departed for Negeri Sembilan to attend a dinner organised by the Malaysian Five Generations Organisation (PLG).

During the Hawana event, Anwar announced that the government would continue allocating funds under the Media Innovation Fund to support the transformation and long-term sustainability of the country’s media industry.

The prime minister said the initiative is aimed at strengthening operational capabilities and accelerating digital transformation among local media organisations in response to the rapidly evolving media landscape.

“I announce that the government has agreed to continue the Media Innovation Fund to assist media organisations in carrying out innovation and strengthening their operations, as well as supporting the digital transformation of the industry,” he said.

Anwar said that 72 media companies have so far received a combined RM24.57 million under various phases of the Media Innovation Fund.

He added that the government remains committed to ensuring continued support so that media organisations are not left behind in terms of capabilities and resources.
