Double parking your car is sometimes unavoidable especially if you’re in a hurry. In Malaysia, it is tolerated as long as you leave your contact number or be nearby to listen out for honks in case someone needs to leave their parking spot.
However, trouble could ensue if one leaves their car double parked and unattended for long periods of time. Not only is it inconsiderate, but it could also spark anger and frustration in other public road users.
One case in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur, recently went viral after the owner of a Perodua Ativa left his car double parked and was nowhere in sight despite another car owner honking for an hour to get him to come and move the vehicle.
People came to move the car by hand
Videos shared on Threads showed a woman whose car was blocked by the red Ativa.
Later, a group of men from an office nearby came to help and moved the double parked Ativa out of the way so the other car can move out.

The owner of the Ativa allegedly threatened to sue everyone who shared the viral video
The man who owned the red Perodua Ativa later allegedly posted a threat to sue each person who shared and reshared the video of his car that was double parked moved by members of the public.
This can no longer be verified as the Ativa owner has set his social media accounts to private.
He posted on his TikTok account, saying: “I will sue anyone who spreads my face online.”

The woman whose car he blocked apologised publicly after damaging his car
An apology video was posted by Ayu, the woman in the video whose car was blocked, after she had caused cosmetic damages to the double parked Ativa.
“Please delete all the posts about this on social media. If you shared it please delete it. This was a lesson for me to not use force. I apologise to Mr. Mohamed and his wife,” she said in a post on Threads.
In the video, she also pointed out where the damages on the car were.

Netizens unhappy over apology video
Malaysians took to the comments section to share their opinions about the situation, and believe Ayu was coerced into making the public apology video.
A few individuals also reported the man for bullying on TikTok, where the viral video was shared.
While many agreed that Ayu’s actions were wrong, they also questioned why the man did not apologise for leaving his car double parked and unattended for so long.

When there is a double parked car blocking your own vehicle with no way out, it’s advisable to honk your car horn to get the attention of the car’s owner, or look for a telephone number on its dashboard and call the person to move their car.
If the car owner is unreachable, use the MyJPJ app to report the offence or contact the local council or traffic police to tow the car. Do not act aggressively or cause property damage as you could be held liable.
Similarly, if you are the one double parking, it’s only considerate to leave your phone number on the dashboard or be near your car in case you need to move it.
