In conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026), the ‘’I LITE U’’ launch ceremony in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur last Saturday (3 Jan) serves as a curtain-raiser to welcome tourists to the country.
I LITE U (an acronym for the Innovative Lighting Infrastructure Towards Eco-elegance Urbanisation project) is a smart-lighting initiative spearheaded by the Housing and Local Government Ministry to enhance and beautify KL’s urban nightscape.
Here are some of the highlights during the launch ceremony:
Michelle Yeoh is the special guest
Oscar-winning actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh was the special guest at the event! The Malaysian icon and UN Goodwill Ambassador for Road Safety and Sustainable Development Goals said it was an honour to be present at the event as Malaysia prepares to welcome the world.
Yeoh also urged Malaysians to show the true meaning of Malaysian hospitality to international guests visiting the country.
She said the lights that were switched on in Bukit Bintang during the event symbolised a shared aspiration for a brighter future.

Anwar honours Michelle Yeoh on stage
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did away with the usual protocols, including formal speeches, to honour Yeoh on stage.
Anwar went out of his way to deliver Yeoh her ‘’flowers’’ for her outstanding achievements on the global stage.
She’s an outstanding actress — I mean, versatile in all sorts of characters and she stood with that discipline and zeal.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim
Yeoh thanked Anwar, and called on Malaysians to seize the day.
I think what it is, like all my fellow Malaysians, we know what it means to work hard and when you work hard and when the opportunity arises, you have to seize it and do well to run with it.
Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh
She added that every time she returns to Malaysia and see everyone’s faces on the streets, it inspired her to do more and represent us all to the rest of the world.
Yeoh thanked everyone for all the encouragement and support; promising to do her very best to make sure ‘’Malaysia Boleh.’’
Yeoh likens KL to a stage and the world as its audience
During her speech, Yeoh drew parallels with a film set by likening Kuala Lumpur to a stage and the world as its audience as Malaysia prepares to welcome tourists near and far.
She said Visit Malaysia 2026 isn’t just about tourism, but an invitation to experience the nation’s diversity, warmth, culinary symphony, and vibrant arts.
When I was asked to take part in this ceremony, I thought of the lights on a film set – lights that reveal depth, colour and the emotion of a story about to unfold.
Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh said that light symbolises two things: to guide and illuminate our paths forward, and also a beacon that signals to others, ‘’Here we are.’’
May the light we switch on shine brightly in the hearts of all who see it.

Yeoh shares viral Wicked moment with Anwar
Yeoh also showed her playful and cheeky side when she made a viral moment on stage with Anwar standing by her side.
Yeoh, who played Madam Morrible in the Wicked films, is famous for her ‘’Madam Morrible to Wicked Witch’’ line and she did it once again at Bukit Bintang.
In the viral clip, Yeoh delivered the line ‘’Madam Morrible, flip it around, Wicked Witch!’’ while holding up her fingers to show the letters MM before flipping it to show WW.
Her iconic line drew an applause from the crowd, including Anwar who looked excited and amused.
