Temperatures at Cameron Highlands dropped to 15 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning (Jan 5), marking a notable cooling trend at Malaysia’s premier hill resort following intensive conservation measures ordered by the Sultan of Pahang.

The Pahang Sultanate announced the temperature reading via its official Facebook page, describing it as evidence that efforts to restore the highland area’s climate are showing results.

Last year, Malaysian media outlets reported that Cameron Highlands – voted the happiest township (district) in Malaysia for 2024 – were no longer as cool as they once were, with meteorological data from 1969 to 2024 showing a consistent warming trend.

Over the past decade, average daily temperatures have risen to 18.91 degrees Celsius.

The warming was attributed to climate change and environmental degradation affecting the highland region, located approximately 1,500 metres above sea level in Pahang state.

Pahang Ruler Orders Environmental Protection

However, temperatures began to decline toward the end of 2025 following a series of measures implemented.

The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, issued directives to preserve the area’s environmental integrity.

The Sultan personally visited Cameron Highlands on working trips to monitor conservation efforts, according to the sultanate’s statement.

During these visits, Sultan Abdullah instructed all relevant parties to work together to protect the natural environment and crack down on illegal land encroachment activities.

“His Majesty decreed that all stakeholders must continue working together to safeguard this gift from Allah with diligence and combat land encroachment activities,” the sultanate said in its Facebook post.

Conservation Efforts Draw Praise

The announcement drew comments from Malaysians expressing gratitude for the Sultan’s intervention, with residents confirming they can feel temperatures returning to previous levels.

“Strict measures with heavy penalties for those who are greedy and seek profit will help preserve Cameron Highlands,” wrote resident Azeman Mohamed.

Mohd Azlan Cikgu, a regular visitor, noted the Sultan made four monitoring visits in 2025 alone.

While some users acknowledged January typically brings cooler weather due to seasonal monsoon winds, they noted this year’s temperature drop was more pronounced.

Illegal land clearing and agricultural encroachment have long plagued the colonial-era hill station, contributing to soil erosion and environmental degradation.

The sultanate did not provide details on specific enforcement actions but emphasised that conservation efforts would continue to maintain the area’s environmental sustainability.
