The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recently placed a temporary block on Grok for users in Malaysia as of yesterday (11 January).
However, TRP has tested the block only to find that the X (formerly Twitter) artificial intelligence (AI) is still accessible via the X mobile app and web browser. While internet service providers (ISP) have blocked the Grok app and website, the workarounds are not that difficult.
According to the AI’s responses, our ability to access and use it despite the block announced by MCMC is apparently thanks to the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), an internet feature that hides your Internet Protocol (IP) address thus creating a secure, encrypted connection, acting like a private tunnel for your data.
To put it in simple terms: a VPN hides your internet connection so no one can see it.
It could also be due to several other factors such as the use of different Domain Name Systems (DNS) like Google or Cloudflare instead of the default DNS provided by ISPs.
The block was implemented after users abused the AI tool to generate pornographic content involving women and children
In a statement, the communications and multimedia authority said that the action was taken following repeated abuse of Grok to generate pornographic and sexually explicit content.
“It also follows the extremely obscene and sexually explicit content and images of non-consensual manipulation, including content involving women and children, despite regulatory action having been issued to X Corp. amd xAI LLC,” MCMC said in its statement.
MCMC had issued notices to X Corp. and xAI LLC last 3 and 8 January to demand the implementation of technical protection measures, among other things.
The demand also includes effective content supervisors to prevent AI-generated content that may violate Malaysian laws, such as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
“However, the response submitted by X Corp. on 7 and 9 January focused primarily on the user-initiated reporting mechanism and failed to address the inherent risks that arise from the design and operation of the AI tool, the commission said.
Based on the response by X Corp., MCMC said it found the action was insufficient to prevent harm and ensure commpliance by the law.
“This temporary ban is imposed as a reasonable precautionary measure while the legislative and regulatory process is ongoing.
“The restriction on access to Grok will remain in place until effective safeguards are implemented, in particular to prevent content involving women and children,” the statement said.
