An edited screenshot of a Berita Harian headline that says “Halal Certification For Pork Is Reasonable – Teresa Kok” has been making rounds on social media recently.
Threads users pointed out that the original headline actually reads “Investigation Into Halal Certification Is Not Reasonable – Teresa Kok”.
The original article, published on 9 September 2024, was also doctored to look like it was published on 13 January 2026.
Many Malaysians actually fell for the misleading content, lashing out at Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok over the controversial, yet fake, headline.

Kok herself took to Facebook to inform that the image was fake, urging everyone to share the message and stating that she had never made such a remark.
In the original Berita Harian article, she was defending a statement she made to an issue about halal certifications for food premises.
She had reportedly said in a statement shared on social media at the time that the implementation of halal certification should be voluntary to allow entrepreneurs to make decisions based on market demand, and not by force.
Kok believed that the proposal to require restaurants and food companies to have halal certificates would only add to the difficulty of business operations and burden small businesses.
This follows a proposal by the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) to make halal certifications compulsory for all restaurants and food companies in the country.
Police later opened an investigation paper against Kok for her claim about halal certifications being a burden to business owners.
Dr Akmal Saleh defamation suit
In September 2024, UMNO Youth Chief Dr. Akmal Saleh made several highly publicized and controversial remarks regarding Kok. These comments were made in response to Kok’s call for the government to review the proposal that would have made halal certification mandatory for all food businesses (excluding those serving pork or alcohol).
Akmal repeatedly referred to Kok as “Nyonya Tua” in his social media videos, and called her “an embarrasment to the country”.
@drakmalsaleh Kepada nyonya tua teresa kok, kamu yang sebenarnya memalukan negara!!! Jangan sentuh isu agama kami!!! #pemudaumnomalaysia ♬ Action – Syafeea library
In October 2024, Kok filed a RM25 million lawsuit against Akmal, claiming his statements were defamatory, racist, and portrayed her as an “enemy of the state”.
Both parties attended a court-ordered mediation session in Melaka on 12 January 2026, which failed to reach a settlement.
According to a recent Malay Mail report, a trial has been fixed for 12 and 13 February at the Melaka High Court.
