7 Malaysians have been deported from Nordland, Norway for offering illegal aurora tours in places like Tromso, Lofoten, and Nordland.
According to Norway’s public service broadcaster NRK, these illegal tour operators did not have work permits in Norway and the authorities have confiscated the illegal profits. Those deported are also banned from entering Norway, the EU, and Schengen countries for two years.
These illegal tours typically offer cheaper fares than other tour groups and bring tourists around on rental vehicles from across the border from Sweden and Finland. Tourists are also offered various safaris and nature experiences.
The authorities said the illegal tour operators reached out to customers through private groups on social media.
Azira Aziz, a Malaysian woman who’s currently living in Scandinavia, shared her views on the matter.
Under Norwegian laws, these illegal tour services aren’t considered side income but an illegal business.
She said it’s dangerous to go on these illegal tours because they do not provide insurance and the drivers do not have permit. If anything happens, especially in snowy weather, tourists in trouble may not be protected under the law.
Azira shared that the Norwegian authorities aren’t anti-tourists, but have these strict laws in place to keep tourists safe during their travels and to protect the tourism industry.
She advised fellow Malaysians who plan to travel to Norway to ensure the tour group operator is licensed and registered in Norway.
