Still In Bed, Selangorians? Today Is NOT A Public Holiday

If you work in Selangor and are still enjoying a slow morning at home, you might want to start making your way to the office — because today (24 August) is not a public holiday in Selangor.

If you have come across posters circulating online claiming that the state government has declared today a public holiday in conjunction with SUKMA Selangor 2026, you can safely ignore them as the announcement has been confirmed as fake.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government would only announce any decision on a special state holiday tonight, during the closing ceremony of SUKMA Selangor 2026.

“Insya-Allah any official announcement regarding a special public holiday (if there is one) will only be made at the SUKMA 2026 Closing Ceremony on Aug 24, Monday at 8pm tonight.

“Therefore, please be informed that the poster circulating is fake and completely untrue.

“Monday, Aug 24, 2026 remains a working day in Selangor,” Amirudin said in a social media post.

Holiday Could Still Be Declared

Selangor Youth and Sports Exco Mohd Najwan Halimi previously said the state government would consider declaring a special holiday if the Selangor contingent emerged as the overall champion of SUKMA 2026, which concludes today.

Najwan said such a move would serve as a gesture of appreciation to Selangor residents for their support throughout the biennial sporting event.

“However, this will only be announced after the medal tally has been finalised. If we emerge as the overall champions, perhaps a holiday could be considered.

“Incentives for the athletes will also be worked on after SUKMA concludes,” he was quoted as saying by Media Selangor.

As of early this morning, Selangor remained at the top of the SUKMA medal standings with 97 gold, 72 silver and 69 bronze medals.

So, for now, Selangor workers — no sleeping in, no last-minute WhatsApp to your boss and definitely no blaming SUKMA.
