An AirAsia flight from Kota Kinabalu to Shanghai underwent additional cleaning after a passenger reportedly defecated near her seat shortly before landing.
Flight AK1516 departed Kota Kinabalu at about 10.30 pm on 18 Aug 18 and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at about 3 am on 19 Aug, according to reports.
The smell began about 40 minutes before landing
Passengers told Chinese media that a strong odour spread through the cabin during the descent.
A passenger seated beside the woman said she was travelling with two children and was seen moving towards the toilet with a bag.
The woman later said she was unwell, the passenger said.
Reports said waste was found on the seat and aisle floor.
One witness said a toilet was a few metres away and remained open at the time.
AirAsia Confirms “Unusual Hygiene Issue”
AirAsia confirmed that an unusual hygiene issue occurred in the aircraft aisle before landing.
The airline said cabin crew used gloves and towels to contain and clean the affected area while ensuring the aircraft landed safely.
After arrival, the captain and ground team were informed.
AirAsia said a more thorough cleaning and disinfection process was carried out after passengers disembarked.
AirAsia China general manager Frank Tang Ting said the crew remained focused on passenger safety and the flight operation during the incident.
Between Sympathy, Jokes And Speculation
Online reactions ranged from calls for sympathy to jokes and speculation about the passenger’s nationality.
Several commenters said the incident could have involved a medical emergency, food poisoning or an urgent need to use the toilet during the aircraft’s descent.
Others asked why the passenger had not been allowed to use the lavatory first.
Some comments focused on the reported use of a plastic bag and the claim that waste spilt into the aisle.
These accounts were attributed to passengers and could not be independently verified.
Other commenters linked the incident to nationality or politics.
Such comments did not cite evidence about the passenger’s identity or circumstances.
