M. Kavita, a mother of five, sweeps roads for a living.

She earns RM1,800 a month.

She has been doing it for over 12 years, rain or shine, alongside her husband, a painter.

Her five children are a nurse, a Singapore Airlines cabin crew member, a high school teacher, a son who works in the same sanitation industry as his mother — and a pilot.

She is 50 years old and is still working.

And when asked why, she doesn’t hesitate.

It’s good to be independent.

The Surprise She Didn’t See Coming

Earlier this month, Kavita’s four daughters showed up at her workplace unannounced — in uniform.

The moment was captured in a video posted by Facebook page The Chindian Diaries, which has since drawn over 133,000 views and 3,400 reactions.

In it, Kavita is asked to turn around.

When she does, her daughters are standing there: the nurse, the cabin crew member, the teacher, and the pilot — the youngest, in full uniform, the one she had apparently dreamed of seeing at her door.

She breaks down immediately.

Her daughters place their work passes, cabin crew handbag, and pilot’s peaked cap on her, one by one.

A transfer of everything she spent 12 years building, laid on her shoulders.

“We promise to achieve more and always make her proud,” one daughter says in a voiceover.

A Month In The Making

The surprise took about a month to organise, according to L. Bharathi, 34, the eldest daughter and a nurse based in Singapore.

It was Santhia, 29, the youngest and the pilot, who proposed it — after their mother mentioned she had dreamed of seeing her youngest surprise her at work in uniform.

For years, they only saw Amma cry through life’s difficult moments, Bharathi told the New Straits Times.

This time, we saw her cry because she was genuinely happy. That made all our efforts worthwhile.

The siblings coordinated schedules and hired a videographer; each took on a role.

The logistics were complicated; the reason was simple.

Since we were young, we watched Amma work under the scorching sun and in the rain without ever complaining. Her sacrifices inspired us to study hard, work hard and change our family’s life.

Still Working, Still Herself

Kavita said the celebration made her years of effort feel worthwhile.

I’m grateful because all the hard work and sacrifices I made raising my children felt worthwhile that day. It is one of the most precious memories of my life.

But she is not stopping.

At RM1,800 a month, with a pilot for one daughter and a cabin crew member for the other, she could.

Nobody would blame her; she has earned the rest.

She is choosing not to — because stopping, for Kavita, would mean becoming someone who stopped.

I’m doing this work with my full heart.

That much, nobody doubts.
