If a cat from overseas should get stranded anywhere, Malaysia might be the best place because of how most people here are cat-lovers by default.

It doesn’t matter where the feline is from. If it needs help or care, a majority of Malaysians would take up the task unconditionally.

Cats have been a common companion to humans for centuries, and it’s still true today.

A stowaway cat from Japan ends up in Malaysia

A man on Threads claimed he found a cat that had somehow gotten onto a frieght container from Japan and landed here in Malaysia.

“Cat trapped in a container, and the container was from Japan. Not sure how long it has been there,” he said in his Threads post.

A video attached to the post showed the cat appearing somewhat soaked, but visibly thin and quite possibly disoriented.

The cat could be heard meow-ing in the video as the man called it “Neko”, which is the Japanese word for cat.

In a separate post, the man shared an update after many users left comments asking how the cat is.

“I’m tired of replying every comment one by one. For everyone’s information, the cat has been fed, given water, and bathed. My friend even went to buy wet food and shampoo. After everything I mentioned earlier was done, that was when I posted the video,” he said.

Many shared their concerns over the cat’s health, and urged the man to take it to a veterinarian for a proper medical checkup as well as any vaccinations it might need.

Some also suggested to find a way to send the cat back to its home in Japan, and a few people advised the man to hand the cat in to the Malaysian Quarantine and and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS), as that is the standard operating procedure for animals that are brought into Malaysia from overseas.

According to one reply, the man said the location where the cat was found was in Bukit Beruntung, Rawang, adding that a friend of his has adopted the cat.

For now, all we know is that the cat will presumably have a new home here in Malaysia, and hope that its new owner will take care of it with love and care.

It seems that stowaway animals in shipping containers happen quite commonly. Another Threads user shared a similar experience where a cat was found in a container from Japan.

“My friend experienced the same thing. He found a white cat trapped inside a container that came from Japan. He contacted the shipping company and it turned out that the cat atually belonged to them.

“The company then sent their Malaysia branch staff to rescue and collect the cat. After that, the cat had to stay in Malaysia for a few weeks before it was cleared and sent back to Japan,” he said.
