MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong had a message for Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor on Saturday.

It was not a long message.

The remarks attributed to Muhammad Sanusi “caused concern among Malaysian Chinese,” Wee said in a media statement on Saturday (25 July).

They “do not help national unity.”

If Muhammad Sanusi had been misunderstood, he should “clarify his remarks clearly and promptly.”

That was it.

No call for an apology, no demand for a retraction; a clarification, if he felt like it, would do.

Then DAP Entered The Statement

The second half of the statement had a different target.

DAP, he said, was “highly skilled at playing the same racial and religious game.”

He cited Hew Kuan Yau — the DAP ceramah speaker whose remarks have repeatedly drawn accusations of stoking racial and religious tension.

He cited Nga Kor Ming.

He said MCA’s principles “do not change according to the identity or political affiliation of the person making the statement” — and then, three sentences later, offered to arrange a private screening of DAP’s greatest hits “for anyone who has conveniently forgotten them.”

The statement was nominally about Muhammad Sanusi.

It was functionally about DAP.

The Electoral Arithmetic

To be fair to Wee, the position was not straightforward.

Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) are contesting Negeri Sembilan’s 36 state seats under an electoral understanding — BN taking 25, PN taking 11.

Blowing up that arrangement over a speech, however uncomfortable, was never really an option.

The statement expressed concern.

It offered Muhammad Sanusi a path to clarify.

And it spent three paragraphs on DAP.
