Refund policies can be dicey, and consumers are always encouraged to read the fine print before purchasing anything.

However, this becomes complicated when the organiser has stated that no refunds are allowed unless you added their ‘refund protection’ option when purchasing the ticket.

Imagine paying for tickets to a concert, only to find out that the concert organiser had changed or postponed the event to a date which you cannot attend.

Naturally, you would ask for a refund and you would be well within your rights to request it since it was the organiser who changed the date.

This is unless the organiser had explicitly stated that no refunds are allowed, or some kind of paid refund package you would need to purchase to be able to secure a full refund.

Malaysian questions fairness to consumers if it’s the organiser who postpones the show

Threads user Hanis Zainul (@nizzkee) vented her refund dilemma through a post after she found out that a concert she bought tickets to was postponed by the organiser.

She said she had sent multiple emails to the organiser requesting a refund to “Yusry’s Eternal Gala Night”, but received no response.

“I genuinely don’t understand how this is fair to consumers. I bought tickets to Yusry’s Eternal Gala Night because it was scheduled for Thursday, July 16th. Like many working adults, I planned my schedule around that date.

“Then the organiser conveniently changed it to Saturday, July 25th. I can no longer attend, so I requested a refund. The response after a few emails we sent was zero response? No refunds, because I didn’t purchase Refund Protect,” she said.

Hanis questioned why customers would have to buy an extra “refund protection” to be protected from an organiser who changed the event date, and highlighted that a set date is one of the main reasons people decide whether they can attend an event or not.

Many agreed with her reasoning, and urged her to fight for a full refund

In the comments section, many empathised with Hanis and her situation, and they all encouraged her to insist for a full refund from the organiser.

Some accused the organiser of pulling a scam, while others simply critcised them of having bad customer service.

A few Threads users advised Hanis to report the matter to the Tribunal for Consumer Claims — an independent quasi-judicial body operating under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN). It provides consumers with a simple, inexpensive, and fast alternative to civil court action to seek redress against errant sellers or service providers.

Checks on the Refund Protect terms and conditions showed a clear list of conditions where a refund is eligible, but it also states that if the event is cancelled or postponed by the provider, the customer would need to contact the organiser’s customer service team directly.

Those who didn’t purchase Refund Protect are still eligible for a refund

TRP reached out to the concert organiser, Sony Music Entertainment Malaysia, who provided an official statement addressing concerns over refunds and the concert’s postponement.

Based on the statement, ticketing platform UberTickets will be reviewing each refund request and if approved, customers will have their money credited back to the original payment method within 30 days.

When asked to clarify what happens to those who purchased tickets but cannot attend the concert since the date was changed, the concert organiser said:

“The event was rescheduled by us. We understand that some ticket holders may no longer be able to attend because of the new date.

“As such, they will still be eligible for a refund regardless of whether they purchased Refund Protection. UberTickets is managing the refund process and will provide updates directly to the affected customers,” a representative at Sony Music Entertainment.

Active in the entertainment industry for over three decades, he is widely celebrated for his contributions to Malaysian music and for directing blockbuster films like Cicakman.
