A group of men allegedly came to collect a debt behind Wisma MCA Jinjang in Kepong on Thursday afternoon (11 June).

According to Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, who posted about the incident on his Facebook page, the group were loan sharks — and they were the ones who ended up getting beaten.

He added that police responded quickly, arresting 13 people, and the case is still under investigation.

It is worth noting that this detail comes from Lim Lip Eng’s Facebook post, not from a police statement.

Lim, who also serves as secretary of the Kuala Lumpur branch of DAP, is a five-term MP, which gives his account some weight, but it remains an allegation until investigators say otherwise.

No police statement confirming the nature of the incident has been issued at the time of publication.

“Memang Macam Drama” — And The Comments Agreed

The footage shows a chaotic scene in the middle of a road.

Men are seen running, scuffling, and at one point standing on top of a vehicle.

It also shows what appears to be a larger confrontation spilling into the open road, with multiple individuals involved.

Lim captioned his post simply: “Memang macam drama, tapi ini kejadian sebenar.”

It looks like a drama, but this is real; he was not wrong.

The comments on his post ranged from dark humour — one commenter suggested the timing was related to the FIFA World Cup season and the need to clear debts before borrowing more — to pointed distrust of authorities, with one commenter writing simply that police and loan sharks are friends.

From Secret Societies To Hawker Stalls

Jinjang was not always just famous for its hawker food.

The neighbourhood began as a Chinese New Village during the Malayan Emergency and spent decades building a reputation for gang rivalries and secret society activity that peaked in the 1980s and 90s.

The era left a strong cultural imprint, inspiring Kepong Gangster, a 2012 Malaysian film directed by Teng Bee, which follows five friends drawn into the orbit of a notorious gang — a story that resonated precisely because it did not feel entirely fictional to those who grew up there.

Older residents still remember that era.

But the area has changed — development, time, and a tight-knit working-class community have quietly transformed it into one of those corners of KL better known today for a good serving of noodles than for anything else.

It is largely safe, if still a little rough around the edges in the way that most old, dense, lived-in parts of the city tend to be.
