Penang Monk Gave Up Worldly Life In 1985, Won RM1 Million — And Plans To Give It Away

Chan Chai Siang has spent four decades giving up worldly possessions.

Last week, the world handed one back.

The 73-year-old Buddhist monk from Air Itam, Penang, was named the winner of Bank Simpanan Nasional’s (BSN) 124th SSP Jutawan Draw — taking home RM1 million in cash.

What makes the win unusual is where the money came from in the first place.

Chan, who has been a monk since 1985, said most of the funds he deposited into BSN’s Sijil Simpanan Premium (SSP) account were donations, alms, ang pows and contributions from members of the public.

“Some of that money I also use to help those in need,” he said after receiving his winner’s cheque at BSN’s Main Branch in Penang.

One Of 16,000 Winners — But Not Quite Like The Others

Before monkhood, he had worked in factories in Singapore and Penang.

He opened his BSN SSP account in January last year.

He has no grand plans for the prize. For now, he says, he will keep it in the bank — and continue helping people.

His win is one of nearly 16,000 prizes under BSN SSP 2026, a scheme offering a total prize pool of RM28 million across 10 categories.

One RM1 million cash prize is drawn monthly from January through November.

A December bonanza draw sweetens the pot further, adding a Porsche Macan X to the RM1 million cash prize for a single winner; the Porsche Macan in Malaysia starts at approximately RM 439,151 for the base variant and can go up to RM 675,000 for the top-spec Macan S.

New savers have until 30 June to deposit a minimum of RM3,000 to qualify for the December bonanza draw.
