A coffee and a biscuit manufacturer based in Melaka were ordered to recall all previously distributed products, after their halal certificates were revoked by religious authorities recently.

State education, higher education, and religious affairs committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman said the order was issued to prevent confusion among consumers, especially Muslims consumers, after the discovery of materials classified as najis mughallazah (severe impurities) found in the companies’ cleaning equipment.

According to Berita Harian, all products that were distributed during the period will be on total recall and monitored to ensure compliance with the given order.

“There is no set duration, and it depends on both companies to fulfill all conditions and procedures before being allowed to reapply for a halal certification from the Melaka Religious Islamic Department (JAIM).

“Together with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), we will continue to monitor the products in the market and immediate action, including seizing the affected products, will be taken if they continue to display the halal logo without the permission of state religious authorities,” Rahmad said.

Melaka coffee maker’s halal certification revoked after pig-hair brush found on premises

Earlier, we reported that a Melaka coffee producer lost their halal status after an inspection by JAIM found brushes made of pig hair were used to clean equipment on the premises. The company’s halal certificate was immediately revoked following the discovery, and an analysis at the Malaysian Halal Analysis Centre in Bandar Enstek confirmed physical characteristics of pig hair on the brushes.

Checks by TRP on the Halal Malaysia Portal found that two companies — Heng Loong Coffee Sdn Bhd and Tian Hup Biscuit Factory Sdn Bhd — had their halal statuses revoked.

The companies must perform sertu before they can reapply for a halal certification

According to a Free Malaysia Today report, Rahmad said the companies must perform sertu (an Islamic cleansing ritual) under Islamic law and established guidelines before reapplying for a halal certification.

“This matter requires further action due to the need to ensure that all equipment is free from ‘haram’ (prohibited) or ‘syubhah’ (doubtful) elements, including implications involving contamination by ‘najis mughallazah’ (sever impurities).

“Even now, they are not allowed to display the halal logo on their premises. If they violate this directive, action can be taken in collaboration with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, including not only notices but also fines,” said Rahmad.

He said the revocation followed routine enforcement by JAIM, and urged all industry players to carefully monitor production chains to protect halal integrity.
