A Melaka coffee and biscuit factory recently had its halal certification revoked effective immediately, after it was found using a brush with bristles believed to be made from pig hair to clean equipment.

However, what stuck out after the news report went viral online was that there was no mention of which coffee and biscuit brands are affected.

The Halal Affairs Division of the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) detected the brush during a spot check, Berita Harian reported.

JAIM director Datuk Md Azhan Samat said the item was confiscated and sent to the Malaysia Halal Analysis Centre (MyHAC) at Bandar Enstek for further investigation. The result of the analysis last month confirmed that the brush did indeed have physical characteristics of pig hair.

“Following that, the Sijil Pengesahan Halal Maalaysia (SPHA) of the factory involved was revoked immediately.

“The factory has been operating for a decade and previously held a a valid halal certificate issued by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM),” he said.

Md Azhan said, the excuse of not knowing given by the factory is not justifiable, adding that halal certificate holders must always maintain full compliance towards the halal standards that have been set to guarantee consumers’ confidence in a product’s halal status on the market.

Sin Sing Coffee denies speculation in official statement

Considering there was no mention of which brand had their certification revoked, social media users started to play the guessing game.

One Melaka company found themselves being accused and took to issuing an official statement.

Sin Sing Coffee clarified that the coffee factory which had its halal status revoked is not theirs.

They explained that information and pictures of the matter that went viral are not related to their company, and are neither the premises nor the equipment they own.

The company clarified that it only produces coffee and not biscuits, as mentioned in news reports.

“Our company consistently maintains the standards and requirements of the Malaysian halal certification. All our processes align with the stipulated hygiene and syariah guidelines. Our halal status is still valid and recognised,” said the company in its statement.

It urged the public not to believe unconfirmed information or make any speculations that could cause any misunderstanding.

Checks by TRP on the Halal Malaysia Portal found that Sin Sing Coffee’s halal status is indeed intact.

Meanwhile, instant coffee producer Aik Cheong Sdn Bhd also put out a statement to inform customers that its products are halal-certified. Checks on the Halal Malaysia portal confirmed this.

Further checks found that the listing for Melaka coffee maker Heng Loong Coffee Sdn Bhd shows that its halal status was withdrawn.

Heng Loong Coffee produces coffee sachets under the brands Cap Cikgu, Heng Loong, and Penyu Kaw.

Malaysians can check the halal status of a company from every state across various industries on the Halal Malaysia Portal.
