A social media post about a photographer attempting to charge RM650 for photos taken near KLCC has led to warnings about similar scams targeting tourists in the area.

Threads user @lawcombe, a Malaysian, shared the incident.

The post, which included a video showing her and a friend posing for photos in the KLCC area at night, has garnered over 930 likes and nearly 300 comments, with many urging tourists to avoid such photographers.

Malaysians who responded to the post said the photographers operating around KLCC are scammers who are not affiliated with the country’s legitimate photography industry.

One commenter warned that there are many such photographer scams in the area and advised people not to pay them.

Another user, who identified themselves as being from the industry, told tourists not to engage with these photographers, emphasising that they are not part of Malaysia’s professional photography sector.

The RM650 price tag drew particular criticism, with some questioning who would pay that much for photos taken on a phone.

Scammers “Not Even Malaysian”

Several commenters claimed the photographers running these operations are not Malaysian nationals.

The assertion was repeated multiple times throughout the thread, with users expressing frustration that foreigners are perpetrating scams that tarnish the country’s image for visitors.

One commenter described the situation as particularly sad, given that non-Malaysians are scamming tourists in Malaysia.

Some advised those approached by such photographers to simply walk towards a police station to see if the photographers would still pursue payment.

They noted that the Bukit Aman police headquarters is not far away and suggested calling the police if harassed.

Calls For Authorities To Intervene

The incident prompted calls for government officials and agencies to take action against the scammers.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Minister of Federal Territories Hannah Yeoh were tagged in some comments, with the public urging daily monitoring of the area.

Many described the practice as a “tourist trap” and urged others not to support such operations.

Enforcement operations have been conducted in the past, with photographers’ equipment confiscated and the culprits fined, but the problem persists in the area.

In a separate post, one individual claimed to have recently witnessed the photographers operating brazenly in front of DBKL patrol officers, alleging that enforcement turned a blind eye.
