Bombings are rare in Malaysia, and the recent incident involving an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that detonated in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, has left many shocked and concerned for their safety.

State police were quick to respond, sweeping the neighbourhood for more explosives and found several more IEDs before they could be used.

Only some property damage was sustained, and nobody was injured in the incident. Many questions were raised both in the news and on social media about who was responsible for the bombing, what their motive was, and whether there is going to be more attacks in the future.

Here’s what we know so far about the IED blast case in Nilai.

The bomb went off early in the morning

On the morning of 22 December 2025, residents of the Desa Palma apartments experienced a brief panic after hearing what sounded like a bomb going off early in the morning, at around 7am.

Negeri Sembilan police conducted a search of the area and discovered several items believed to materials for IEDs.

State police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said a team of officers were quickly dispatched to the scene after receiving reports from the 999 emergency hotline and witnesses reported that the explosion came from a vehicle.

According to Alzafny, further investigation of the surrounding properties revealed three objects suspected to be improvised bombs in one of the homes.

Police continued searching the area all day and past midnight to ensure no other explosive threats were missed.

Manhunt for bomb maker launched

Police launched a manhunt for a man described as “dangerous and highly wanted” in relation to the bomb blast in Nilai, Malay Mail reported on 26 December 2025.

Alzafny identified the suspect as 62-year-old Yeoh Hock Sun, who is from Kelantan, with preliminary investigations indicating that he acted alone.

At the time, initial findings by the police showed that the blast involved a Proton Wira, while further investigations led police to a shophouse near the scene where 31 IEDs were discovered and subsequently destroyed.

Alzafny was quoted as saying that the explosives were fitted with timers and sensors, and were made using easy to obtain materials such as isopropyl alcohol, sulphur and black carbon, along with dangerous fragments like nails, iron balls and blade pieces.

The man suspected of being involved in the bombing incident was arrested in the Batang Benar area by police thanks to public tip-offs, according to a Malay Mail report dated 28 December 2025.

Burn injuries were found on Yeoh’s face, body, hands and legs during a body inspection conducted by police after his arrest.

Alzafny explained that Yeoh is suspected to have technical knowledge and special skills in making explosives, based on the discovery of devices and equipment seized from his rented accommodation.

Bernama reported that Yeoh is being remanded until 3 January 2026. The remand order was issued by Senior Assistant Registrar Siti Nur Ain Ariffin at Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban, where the suspect was receiving treatment for his injuries.

“The remand will facilitate further investigation under Sections 307 and 435 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 4 of teh Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958,” Alzafny said in a statement.
