Political activist and satirical artist Fahmi Reza had over 50 police reports lodged against him recently for making a comment on X (formerly Twitter) which allegedly insulted the Crown Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

According to Free Malaysia Today, the reports were filed by non-governmental organisations (NGO), youth associations, community leaders, individuals, and Johor executive council members Aznan Tamin and Khairin-Nisa Ismail.

Media Digital Johor, a state government-owned news portal, said the police reports were lodged in various districts across the state, with 20 state assemblymen included.

The Tweet that allegedly insulted TMJ

On 15 December, Fahmi posted a Tweet that seemingly insinuated the Johor regent was above the law.

Prior to this Tweet, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had sent a request to X to remove a post Fahmi made on 7 December.

He then publicly shared a notice he received from X informing him of the request made by MCMC to take down the post, which he did not.

The Tweet in question reads: “You all know that I have never been afraid to criticise or make fun of the “Yellow Umbrella” group with political satire as a weapon, even if they are the King or Queen, the prince of whichever state, from the ‘#pushUP4environment guy’ to ‘Ismail Nike’ TMJ”.

This was in response to an X user who labelled him as an “antihero” which royal families and political parties are wary of for his unconventional ways of informing and educating the masses on political affairs.

MalaysiaKini reported that Fahmi also received death threats over the Tweet about Tunku Ismail.

The Crown Prince of Johor has recently been vocal concerning the Football Association of Malaysia’s (FAM) controversy involving seven naturalised Harimau Malaya players and their alleged forged documentation that resulted in sanctions by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

Fahmi got in trouble with the law earlier this month over another one of his satirical artworks

During one of his Kelas Demokrasi videos titled “Can PMX be Fired?”, Fahmi showed a sticker of a brown cartoon mouse wearing a suit with the letters “PM” (for Perdana Menteri or Prime Minister) printed over it.

He later received a notice from the Criminal Investigation Department of the North Klang police headquarters informing him that he is being investigated under Section 504 and 505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He was summoned to the headquarters and was ordered to bring the sticker with him to assist in the investigation.
