The ongoing furor surrounding the Damansara Damai veterinary clinic has escalated dramatically, with a prominent lawyer challenging the vet at the heart of the scandal to take her threatened lawsuit all the way to court and daring authorities to act or step down.

At a press conference on Tuesday (23 December), lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, representing animal rights advocates including Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (PEKA), took a combative stance toward both the veterinarian implicated in the case and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS). He issued a direct challenge to the vet accused of negligence, saying: “If you believe you have been defamed, then sue. Take us to court. Let the facts be tested in an open forum,” The Sun reported.

The challenge came after veterinarian Dr Fadzilah Ai’ni Abdul Kadir reportedly indicated she may pursue legal action against activists and media outlets that have criticised her handling of the situation — which included the discovery of a dead dog and cat inside the clinic premises.

The case went viral after animal welfare activist Shima Aris shared a video on social media showing the condition inside the clinic.

Rajesh stressed that this was not a matter of “gossip or rumours” but one involving possible deaths, evidence and enforcement that deserved public scrutiny rather than legal threats.

“These are matters that should be scrutinised, not silenced,” he said, reinforcing that legitimate criticism on issues of public interest should not be chilled by lawsuits.

DVS Director-General urged to resign if the department doesn’t take action

In a second bold move, Rajesh also publicly called on the Department of Veterinary Services director-general to resign if the department failed to institute formal court action within 24 hours against the vet implicated in the alleged neglect.

The lawyer’s comments came amid mounting pressure from animal welfare groups and close to 2,000 complaints lodged with the DVS over alleged neglect at the Damansara Damai clinic, which is currently under investigation under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Malay Mail reported.

Rajesh urged the Malaysian Veterinary Council (MVC) to clarify whether disciplinary procedures had been started and whether the vet’s professional licence was being reviewed — questioning why substantive action has yet to be taken. He warned that if enforcement continued to stall, activists would consider further accountability measures, including protests and additional formal complaints.

Animal welfare advocates at the event also shared graphic images of the deceased animals and alleged substandard conditions at the clinic, fuelling public outrage and highlighting the intensity of pressure on regulators and professionals alike.

As the controversy continues to unfold, Rajesh’s dual demands — for legal clarity through open court proceedings and for leadership accountability at the DVS — mark a new and confrontational chapter in the case that has gripped social media and animal welfare circles across Malaysia.

How Pumpkin the dog ended up in the Damansara Damai vet clinic

According to an Instagram Stories post on Shima’s account, the owner of the Daschund named Pumpkin which was found dead in Dr Fadzilah’s clinic was too old to care for the animal and asked another woman, Jessi, to take care of the pup.

Jessi could not afford to raise Pumpkin and trusted Dr Fadzilah to help find an adopter who would take the dog.
