One of the things Kuala Lumpur can brag about is being a city with plenty of green lungs and pockets of trees.

Beautiful nature reserves — some big and some small — dot the entire capital city and provide not just shelter, but also a space for commnunity as well as a habitat for some of Malaysia’s diverse wildlife.

This is why it’s disheartening to see some of these spaces get destroyed by individuals who want to use them for their own selfish gains, despite being gazetted as protected green spaces.

How one man exposed a neighbour who was allegedly felling trees in their area

A man named Jordan Curzon posted a video on Instagram recently to talk about an incident that happened two years ago, where a neighbour who lived in the same apartment building began removing trees from a green space nearby using a method called “ring barking”.

Curzon highlighted how that green space was home to more than 30 species of birds, and that his neighbour’s actions was posing a threat to their habitat. Based on his video, the space was lush with trees in 2024, but over just two years, the density of greenery became less and less.

“One day we noticed a resident of our building clearing land between the trees. When we went to have a look, we found that eight if the trees had been ring barked.

“He told us he wanted the space for his own personal garden, and that the trees were cut down because they were blocking his sunlight,” Curzon said.

Curzon and his wife tried to heal the trees, but it was too late and the trees eventually fell from being ring barked. Eventually, a call to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was made and the fallen trees were cleared.

In his video, Curzon also highlighted how the area might have also been treated with some sort of chemical, as the grass in the area was brown and discoloured.

The man allegedly responded with aggression every time he was asked to stop

Curzon said that he had advised his neighbour to use the space as is, and not expand the clearing any further.

“Each time we are met with aggression and he claims that he can do as he wishes with the land,” he wrote in the post’s caption.

In an update four days ago, Curzon said that a team from DBKL had come and taped off the gazetted area. He thanked everyone who helped raise awareness and bring attention to the situation in order to deter the man who was clearing the area of trees.

That green area is actually gazetted by the federal government

In th video, Curzon highlighted that the area where the man was felling trees is actually a gazetted green area.

In February this year, Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh announced an open data initiative that allows the public to access a full online list of gazetted green and open spaces in Kuala Lumpur.

Anyone can view the list by heading to the Federal Territory Land and Mines Office official website and clicking on the MyHijau icon.

At time of writing, there are a total of 542 gazetted green and open spaces in Kuala Lumpur.

When an area is gazetted as a green area in Kuala Lumpur, it means the land has been legally designated as a permanent public space or nature reserve. This also means that the land is legally safeguarded and cannot be arbitrarily converted into commercial or residential developments.
